Halloween might be one of my favorite times of year, the fall colours and smells, pumpkin everything and of course cozying up with comfort foods and hot drinks. Everything about this time of year is picturesque, except somehow Halloween tends to be the holiday where all the decorations are the one-dimensional witchy purple or Frankenstein green and incorporate cartoon cats and plastic caution tape. Take your Halloween hosting from spook-tacky-lar to scary sophisticated with these decor and entertaining inspirations.
Brew up a moody cocktail
Serve up this smoky yet sweet cocktail from Half Baked Harvest. Originally created for a Harry Potter themed party, this festive Deathly Hallows Cocktail is simple and also works great for Halloween. A mix of cranberry juice, orange liquor, ginger beer and a hint of maple syrup for some sweetness, this brew is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Take it to the next level and add a sprig of thyme and light it on fire to infuse with subtle notes of thyme and add some seriously eerie vibes.
Black is back
Want to keep things simple and classy? Ditch the same oldfield orange and opt for black and white pumpkins. These beautiful pumpkins give off an ‘Adams Family’ vibe, and are a great way to personalize for your family. Entertaining with Emily created these classic cameo locket silhouette pumpkins and made one for each of her kids.
Her mantel display turned out gorgeous using only black and white decor, just add your own bats, skulls, cobwebs and pumpkins. Putting some half-melted candles in the open fireplace really ties the whole mantel together, and gives that extra bit of creepy.
What’s old is new again
Get creative and find those unusual items to add to your table decor, just like this styled shoot for One Fab Day.
Dust off the china cabinet pieces (or don’t if they include real cobwebs) and find those glass decanters, odd medicine bottles, lace doilies, vintage brass and silver candlesticks to create an old, yet warm and mysterious vibe. Basically, raid Grandma’s cupboard for inspiration and those character pieces, or hit up thrift stores for some great vintage finds at a fraction of the cost.
Tip: If you want your candles to have that ‘drippy’ affect, light them at least an hour before guests arrive. Test them out prior to your event and see how far they burn down in an hour, then adjust as needed to get the desired effect before the ghouls come over.
Change it up
Michelle Rogers created a non-traditional Boho Halloween Party inspired by the all-time favourite show, Friends for Inspired by This.
With a colour-scheme of rich forest green, burnt orange, black, gold and a pouty pink this party definitely was creative and incorporated fun elements from the show. It wouldn’t be a Friends tribute without smelly cat, Joey’s ‘how you doin’ catchphrase, and a skeleton guest, making this decor inspiration a fresh spin on typical Halloween decor.
